Tips from the river

What worked with Viking · public · no reservation PII

What actually worked on the phone, in writing, or at the dock. No reservation numbers, no emails, no phone numbers — those get stripped. The board is public and unowned, same as the gauge history: useful, not a guest file.

  1. The askstarter8 Sept

Two outcomes only. Say them out loud.

Open with: penalty-free cancel/rebook, or 100% cash / 100% FCC. Then stop talking. If the agent fills the silence with a 60% voucher, a sister-ship “same stateroom,” or a coach around Kaub, repeat the two outcomes. Do not bargain the number. The desk is not a negotiation of 60 vs 80. It is restore the river, or make us whole.

  2. Gaugesstarter11 Sept

Kaub is the gate. Maxau being low does not unlock it.

Every published Amsterdam↔Basel Longship has to pass Kaub. GlW there is 77 cm; passing a full-size hull gets impossible near 48 cm on the pegel (about 1.6 m of actual water). A Köln or Maxau recovery is the approach, not the cut. If an agent says “the river is coming up,” ask which pegel, which centimetre, and whether Kaub has held through GlW. A one-day bounce is not an escalate.

  3. Reject 60%starter9 Sept

60% + bus is not Rhine Getaway.

A Mid-Rhine Getaway that coaches the gorge, hotels a night, or swaps you onto a Benelux loop is a different product. Say that. Viking’s published concession on Current Sailings is still the 60% FCC path — treat it as the thing you are rejecting, not a starting offer. Ask for the named letter in writing before you discuss anything else.

  4. CR letterstarter10 Sept

Another hull’s letter is not yours.

Do not reopen the file because a Facebook group posted someone else’s 60% note. The trigger is a named CR letter or a named sister-ship swap on this reservation, in writing, to these guests. Until that prints, hold. Ask the agent: “What is the date and the reservation number on the letter you are looking at?” If they cannot name yours, it is not a fact on this booking.

  5. The briefstarter12 Sept

Send the one-pager. Do not argue from memory.

Fill the reservation locally (it never hits the public database), produce the agent brief, copy or print it, and send that. Live Kaub, WSV forecast, AIS, and the two-outcome ask are already on the page. Agents respond to a dated sheet with numbers. They do not respond to “I saw online the Rhine is low.”

  6. Timingstarter13 Sept

Do not reopen on a 5 cm drift.

Inside 30 days the cancel window is treated as ~100% penalty / no FCC unless Viking names a path. Watch Kaub daily. Reopen only if (1) a named letter or named swap prints on this reservation, (2) the sailing is cancelled in writing, or (3) Kaub actually recovers through GlW and holds, or collapses further in a way that changes the operational story. 25–35 cm is the same story.

  7. The agentstarter14 Sept

Ask who can actually issue 100%.

The first person on the phone often cannot do 100% cash or FCC. Ask, early: “Who on this reservation can approve a penalty-free cancel or 100% make-whole, and what is their queue?” Get a name, a date, and a written follow-up. If they pivot to Customer Relations as the notifier, that is not a decision. Hold the ask until a named person answers it.
